2014 Goya Windsurfing Equipment, sneak peak!

Yesterday we showed you a first time sneak peak of the new 2014 Goya Windsurfing boards; the Goya custom pro and the Goya One Freewave. Today we have a sneak peak of 2 new sails from Goya that perfectly suit the atributes of those boards. Goya Windsurfing have a world wide reputation for making bombproof, world class wave sails and improving on them each year is a massive ask! But Goya manage to do it year after year and with a brief look at their new sails, things are looking promising for 2014!

With the bar already set so high making better sails will be a tough ask. But with Goya, the quality of their sails is never questioned and their new offerings will be no doubt mind blowing out on the water!

The 2014 Goya Banzai Wave Sail is probably one of the most eagerly anticipated sails of this year! With the previous Banzai models being such a hit with amateur and pro riders alike the 2014 Banzai from Goya Windsurfing will have to be awesome! The Banzai was and is Goya Windsurfing’s first and only 4 batten wave sail, the lightweight and immediate power have been terrific attributes that have been sailed to the edge of wave riding performance by team riders like Marcilio Browne and Levi Siver. The Banzai is all about the low, locked center of effort which delivers incredible light wind performance as well as high wind control. The Banzai is for generating as much lift as possible in a smaller sail size. Because of the tight leech and central draft profile, the Banzai provides extremely quick planing, plus quick and responsive handling in maneuvers. Goya Windsurfing are possibly the highest regarded name when it comes to building wave gear. Their notoriety for building bombproof world class wave sails is almost unparalleled. Over recent years Goya Windsurfing have moved their expertise into creating world class wave boards too. Luckily Boylo’s have managed to grab a sneak peak at some of the 2014 Goya Windsurfing equipment that is coming our way!

The thing is though when you are making such high quality gear it can be really tough to make new gear that surpasses the last. However, with the sneak peak we are about to show you, Goya Windsurfing could have managed to do it.

The Goya Windsurfing custom quad has long been a sought after board by all wave sailing enthusiasts. For 2014 Goya Windsurfing made the nose slightly narrower for a more surfboard like entry which allows you to get closer to the critical section of the wave.
Goya Windsurfing made the new board very compact with a faster progressive rocker, resulting in more speed and drive when sailing and wave riding. Goya Windsurfing suggest you pick one size bigger than your normal choice as the new board feels very small, and a higher volume will allow you to use a smaller sail, making wave riding that much more enjoyable. Founder Fransisco Goya had this to say:

“A whole new level of excitement! Really these are the words that come mind as I’m riding the new CUSTOM for the first time. I feel so much more connected to the whole board, it’s fast and intuitive to the point that I wonder if I even need footstraps. Another board from Goya Windsurfing that has really turned heads in 2013 is the Goya Windsurfing the One freewave board. The 2014 model is slightly shorter and has a higher entry rocker this gives the board a massive range, both for conditions and for riding styles, especially when switching between fin set ups. The fin setup versatility of these boards allows you to adapt one board to suit multiple conditions meaning you can make the most of the conditions you have in front of you. Fransisco had this to say:

Join the K4 Fins Revolution!

The windsurfing world is forever being hit by newer, more advanced, higher performance equipment. Carbon fiber features in a lot of performance conversations; boards, masts, booms, even fins. But recently, for wave and freestyle riders, performance conversations regularly involve plastic fins! Not just any random plastic fins though, K4 Fins. K4 Fins are tearing the wave and freestyle market apart! All the ‘high performance’ fins and constructions are being sailed out of the water by K4 Fins. But where has this sudden revolution in performance fins come from?

K4 Fins is the brain child of Hotsailsmaui rider Steve Thorpe who’s UK sail number is…wait for it…K4! Steve is based in Leicestershire and constantly travels hundreds of miles searching for the best waves and wind to compliment his water born obsession with windsurfing and surfing. Steve studied physics, maths and further maths at A-level and remembers once scoring one of the highest marks in the country for a fluid dynamics test! He applied this knowledge to create the K4 Fins when working in his father’s injection moulding company.

The benefits of the fins really have to be felt to be believed, as a wave riding biased fin they are almost entirely unbeatable! In your bottom turn the flex of the fins allows you to drive them hard and fast. As you’re going through the bottom turn and your speed starts to drop off the fins give you something back; all that ‘stored’ energy from the flex is given back to you when you need it most. In doing so, you don’t get stuck through your turn. You can power all the way through to the lip and smack it at full velocity.

Team rider Graham Ezzy has this to say about the flex of the fins:

“The flex allows me to go more vertical and hit later lips. Instead of getting stuck in the curl, I can push on top of it and get more projection. Super cool.”

But it’s not just the pro’s that are benefiting from the performance characteristics of the K4 fins. For us everyday riders, the ‘stored’ energy the K4 Fins deliver through wave riding is even more important. For a perfect turn like the one’s Mr Ezzy is probably dishing out, the fins are great. But for those of us whose bottom turn might not be perfect the added push the K4 Fins give you really makes a difference. The Starboard Element 9’8 is one of those models that manufacturers sometimes come up with where improving the shape is near impossible. The wave orientated all rounder has proven it’s performance capabilities the world over with pro’s and amateurs and is a common favourite among those who ride it. But how come the Starboard Element 9’8 is so good?

The surf inspired shape of the Starboard Element 9’8 has taken a lot of time to perfect and get right and the word that best describes this plan shape is balanced. A 30″ wide point on the board gives the rider a good amount of stability and therefore confidence when either paddling on flat water or when taking the board out through the waves. Thank heavens the weather is changing! Spring has made a dramatic turn and is now showing signs of summer weather! The blue sunny skies and flatter waters may make some watersports fans upset, but for paddle sports, kayaking in particular, the conditions don’t really get much better! Heading into summer the water is still pretty cold but when your kayaking out on flat water, the chances of going in are hopefully quite small allowing you to get out onto the water earlier in the season than many other watersports and stay out there for longer!

Demand for better Paddle Boards has gone up and the level of equipment is so much higher now than it ever was. The Starboard Drive is designed to be a superb all rounder with the ability to be an efficient flat water paddler and also a lively and agile wave rider. As with many of Starboard’s models the Starboard Drive is available in a variety of constructions. The Brushed Carbon Construction is Starboards performance construction with minimal weight and maximum strength, this would be the perfect construction for those looking to really exploit the Starboard Drive’s prowess in the waves. The Wood construction from Starboard is gorgeous to look at and really gives you a sense of occassion when riding the Starboard Drive. An EVA foam deck pad covers the standing area for grip and board protection. The AST candy and white share the same shape with the AST silver. However, the Candy has a full EVA deck pad and the White has Starboard’s startouch deck grip. The AST white is the basic level construction and offers the best value amongst the constructions.

The AST Silver construction is a great design concept from Starboard. What it does is add a mast track for attaching your windsurf sail! Windsurfing on your Starboard Drive is a fantastic way to further extend the versatility of your board and open up a huge range of water conditions and opportunities using just one board! We absolutely adore this construction from Starboard and when mixed with the versatile, popular shape of the Starboard Drive it makes for a true all round winning SUP!

Chilly waters but warmer weather, mean that whilst the blue skies and waves may look appealing, you still need to be kitting yourself out in order to make the most of the water in our late spring to early summer. Luckily there are a lot of good products on the market designed to let you enjoy the surf, without worrying about getting cold. Today we’ll be reviewing one of the Boylo’s favourites, the O’Neill Heat 3mm Split Toe Wetsuit Boot.

The O’Neill Heat 3mm Split Toe Wetsuit Boot is a superb product for year round surfing, but it particularly suits our UK climate and water temperatures. The 3mm thickness may not be as thick as some of the other boots on the market, but thanks to the high quality build and great features you’ll struggle to see much of a difference in warmth. Whats more, with the reduced thickness comes a greater sensation from feet to board. So whether your surfing, windsurfing, paddle boarding, kite surfing or any other watersport, your feet will feel more connected when standing on your gear, giving you a better base for balance and control.

The O’Neill Heat 3mm Split Toe Wetsuit Boots boast some great features to enhance their performance. Their split toe is a truly great design and gives you a much more locked in and snugg fit from the boots and feels great when performing boardsports, as you get full use of your big toe and other toes seperately meaning superior feel and balance. The split toe also prevents your foot from rolling around in the boot when moving, this is further enhanced by the horizontal torsion control system on the top of the foot of the boot, which prevents the boot from over twisting or rolling about on your foot. All this means that you notice wearing the boots less and less and can therefore focus better on the sport you’re doing.

O’Neill are all about surfing in colder waters and there experience shows when it comes to making their products warm. The O’Neill Heat 3mm Split Toe Wetsuit Boots are made from O’Neill’s fluid foam material, which is vitally warm and yet incredibly supple giving you more feeling without losing warmth. All the seams in the O’Neill Heat 3mm Split Toe Wetsuit Boots are Glued and Blind stitched, which prevents any water from getting through the seams. By not passing the thread all the way through the material when sowing and therefore not making a hole, there is no where for the water to get through. The glue is then placed over the seam for good measure and what you end up with is a waterproof seal. This combined with the top shin strap that prevents flushing water into the boot, means that very little water actually gets to your feet, keeping you warmer and importantly, in the water for longer!

Clever design like the shin strap to stop flushing and little details like the loop on the heel of the shoe for getting them on, show just how well thought out the O’Neill design is.
